After I had finished my work in the Department of Huancavelica, in January 1938, I made a lengthy stay on Lake Junin. This lake is the source of the Mantaro River, and lies about 50 miles north of Oroya, at an altitude of a little less than 14,000 feet. It is situated in a great plain, ringed by rather low rolling brown hills. It is, of course, in typical Puna zone.
