"title": "Consumption of the frog Hylarana nicobariensis Stoliczka, 1870 by a crab Parathelphusa pulcherrima (De Man, 1902), with a mini review of feeding on amphibians by crabs",
"type": "article",
"abstract": "We present a first record of feeding by the freshwater crab species, Parathelphusa pulcherrima on the frog species Hylarana nicobariensis (Ranidae) from Sabah (Borneo, Malaysia) together with a comprehensive review of crab predation on amphibians. A total of 32 crab species identifiable to 27 genera have been recorded to prey on frogs from at least 42 species in 35 genera, representing 21 families and one species of salamander to-date. The majority of the predation accounts were from the Neotropics and Afrotropics subcontinent.",

"title": "Taxonomic studies on Hygrophorus in China: New species and revised taxonomy",
"type": "article",
"abstract": "A taxonomic revision of the genus Hygrophorus in China was conducted using integrated morphological and molecular phylogenetic analyses, based on sequences of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region, the large subunit nuclear ribosomal RNA (nrLSU) and the translation elongation factor 1-alpha (tef1-α) gene. Our study confirms the recognition of five new species as H. atropurpureus and H. ochraceodiscus in sect. Hygrophorus; H. paulus and H. shennongjiaensis in sect. Pudorini; and H. aurantiophyllus in sect. Vividi. Phylogenetic analysis, based on ITS data and the concatenated ITS + nrLSU + tef1-α dataset, demonstrated that H. atropurpureus groups with H. aff. atropurpureus; H. ochraceodiscus is sister to H. brunneodiscus; H. aurantiophyllus forms a clade with H. vividus and an undescribed taxon; and H. paulus and H. shennongjiaensis group together with H. nemoreus. Detailed morphological descriptions, ecological notes and updated geographical distribution records are provided for these new taxa as well as for several previously described species. These findings bring the total number of confirmed Hygrophorus taxa in China to 63, establishing a more robust framework for understanding the diversity of this genus in the region.",

"title": "Three lignicolous freshwater fungi of Neohelicomyces (Tubeufiales, Tubeufiaceae) from Guizhou Province, China",
"type": "article",
"abstract": "Lignicolous freshwater fungi are key decomposers in freshwater ecosystems, playing crucial roles in nutrient cycling and energy flow. During investigations into microfungi in freshwater habitats in Guizhou Province, China, six specimens of Neohelicomyces were collected from submerged decaying wood. Detailed morphological examinations, together with multi-gene phylogenetic analyses based on LSU, ITS, rpb2 and LSU1-α sequence data, were conducted to clarify their taxonomic placements. Phylogenetic results revealed that these collections represent two novel species, N. brevis and N. wujiangensis, and one known species, N. astrictus, which is reported here as a new habitat record from a freshwater habitat. The two new species can be distinguished from their closest relatives by differences in conidiophore morphology, conidial size and septation, and colony characteristics, and are well supported as independent lineages in the phylogenetic analyses. This study expands the species diversity of Neohelicomyces and highlights freshwater ecosystems in southwestern China as important reservoirs of helicosporous hyphomycetes diversity.",

"title": "Three novel species of Asterina (Asterinales, Dothideomycetes) from Hainan Province, China",
"type": "article",
"abstract": "Asterina comprises obligate biotrophic fungal pathogens that form black colonies on the surface of living leaves and derive nutrients by penetrating host epidermal cells, often resulting in tissue damage. In this study, three new species of Asterina from Hainan Province, China, are described based on morphological characteristics and multi-gene phylogenetic analyses (nrITS, nrLSU, and nrSSU), with phylogenetic relationships inferred by maximum likelihood (ML) and Bayesian inference (BI) to resolve their taxonomic placement. The new species Asterina breyniicola, A. heyneicola, and A. olaciphila were collected from living leaves of Breynia fruticosa, Heynea trijuga, and Olax scandens. Detailed morphological descriptions, illustrations, and a phylogenetic tree illustrating their positions are provided. These findings expand the known diversity of Asterina and provide integrated morphological and molecular evidence to improve species delimitation and classification within Asterinaceae.",

"type": "article",
"abstract": "Ornithoboea brachycarpa C.Xiong, F.Wen & Y.G.Wei, a new cave-dwelling species discovered in Guangxi, China, is described and illustrated. It is morphologically distinctive within the genus by its stamens bearing a beard on the sterile projection, a character not observed in any other known species of Ornithoboea. Phylogenetic analysis of ITS and trnL-F sequences places it as sister to O. feddei (H.Lév.) B.L.Burtt. Currently, only one population comprising approximately 150–200 mature individuals has been confirmed at the type locality. According to the IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria, it is provisionally assessed as Endangered (EN D).",

"type": "article",
"abstract": "Ceropegia gengmaensis P.R.Luo, A.Liu & H.Sun, a new species from Gengma County, Yunnan, Southwest China, is described. Both morphological characteristics and chloroplast phylogenetic analysis strongly support its placement within C. sect. Chionopegia H.Huber. Molecular data further reveal that C. gengmaensis is closely related to C. salicifolia, C. mairei, and C. dolichophylla, yet it can be distinguished from them readily by its stem indumentum, leaf shape, and floral morphology, particularly the shape of the corolla tube, and features of the lobes. A detailed line drawing of this new species is also provided.",

"title": "Adenia sajoreciae (Passifloraceae), a new species from Kenya and its phylogenetic placement",
"type": "article",
"abstract": "A new species, Adenia sajoreciae (Passifloraceae), from Kenya is described and illustrated. It is morphologically related to A. ellenbeckii but differs by being glabrous on all parts, except on the perianth lobes of male and female flowers (vs. subglabrous to pubescent throughout), bearing entire spinose-dentate leaves without laminar glands (vs. entire to deeply palmately 3–7-lobed or pinnatifid leaves with laminar glands), narrower flowers (vs. broader flowers), and globose, smaller fruits (vs. subglobose to ellipsoid, larger fruits). The phylogenetic analysis of Adenia based on ITS sequences placed three accessions of A. sajoreciae in a strongly supported and well-resolved clade (bootstrap support (BS) = 100%; posterior probability (PP) = 1.00), which is sister to A. ellenbeckii (BS = 99%; PP = 1.00), within Adenia sect. Blepharanthes. Based on both morphological and molecular evidence, Adenia sajoreciae N.Wei, S.W.Wang, Kirika & Q.F.Wang is described as a new species. Additionally, an updated identification key for species in the genus Adenia in Kenya is provided.",

"title": "A new species of Phalacrostemma (Annelida, Sabellariidae) from the West Mariana Ridge, northwestern Pacific",
"type": "article",
"abstract": "A new species of Phalacrostemma (Annelida, Sabellariidae) is described based on the specimens collected at a depth of 675 m on the Ritto Seamount of the West Mariana Ridge, northwestern Pacific. This record represents both the deepest occurrence of Sabellariidae in Japan and the first record of the genus Phalacrostemma from the region. Phalacrostemma ritto sp. nov. dwells in a tube made of small sand particles and foraminiferans, which is attached to the spines of a cidarid sea urchin. The new species is characterized by having 22–30 pairs of outer paleae arranged in a spiral, outer paleae with acute tips and compact thecae, one or two inner paleae in each row, 8–13 opercular papillae on each side, five pairs of nuchal hooks with curved tips, a pair of slender ventral lobes on the first chaetiger, a single pair of conical papillae on the second chaetiger, bilobed notopodia in the middle to posterior abdomen, and abdominal uncini bearing three rows of teeth. A phylogenetic analysis, which included the new species and the newly sequenced Idanthyrsus okudai and Sabellaria isumiensis and was based on sequences of four gene fragments (COI, 16S, 18S, and 28S), was conducted. The new species was nested within the fully supported Phalacrostemma clade and recovered as the sister taxon to Gesaia csiro, whereas support values for phylogenetic relationships among sabellariid species were generally low.",

"title": "A new deep-water scavenger species in the genus Caeconyx (Crustacea, Amphipoda, Lysianassoidea, Uristidae) from the Porcupine Abyssal Plain",
"type": "article",
"abstract": "Caeconyx papso sp. nov. within the family Uristidae is described from the Porcupine Abyssal Plain, Northeast Atlantic Ocean. The new species differs from the only other member of the genus, Caeconyx caeculus, in possessing a triangular, sub-acute eye lobe, a convex and broadly rounded posterodistal margin of epimeron 1, and propodi of pereopods 3 and 4 that are not slender or elongate. Molecular sequence data for COI, H3, 16S, and 28S genes are provided for C. papso sp. nov. Phylogenetic analyses were conducted using this sequence data to assess the relationships between the new species, other members of the family Uristidae, and morphologically allied taxa within the family Tryphosidae. The new species is fully illustrated, and a key to species within Caeconyx is presented.",

"title": "An integrated taxonomic and conservation assessment of Glauconycteris (Chiroptera, Vespertilionidae) in Cameroon, with the description of two new species from the Northwestern Congolian Lowland Forest",
"type": "article",
"abstract": "The genus Glauconycteris (Vespertilionidae) comprises small, forest-dependent bats distributed across sub-Saharan Africa. Despite its distinctive morphology, the genus remains poorly represented in collections and its taxonomy unresolved. During recent field surveys in southeastern Cameroon, ten Glauconycteris specimens were collected from the Northwestern Congolian Lowland Forest, eight from Lobéké National Park (LNP) and two from the Dja Biosphere Reserve (DBR). Morphometric and molecular analyses assigned these specimens to eight species, including representatives of three species groups (poensis, beatrix, and humeralis). One species, G. superba, is recorded for the first time from Cameroon and two are described herein as new to science, Glauconycteris baka sp. nov. and Glauconycteris lobeke sp. nov. These findings increase the total number of recognised Glauconycteris species to 15 and confirm that G. beatrix, as previously understood, represents a species complex, revealing further cryptic diversity within the genus. By combining taxonomic, ecological, and distributional data, our results indicate that most members of the genus tolerate moderate habitat degradation and that all 11 species recorded from Cameroon occur within or adjacent to at least one protected area. This study provides the first integrated taxonomic assessment of Glauconycteris in Cameroon, refines species distributions, and contributes additional ecological data for three species (G. gleni, G. egeria, and G. curryae) currently listed as Data Deficient on the IUCN Red List. Our findings underscore the importance of continued sampling in the Guineo-Congolian region to better inform the conservation of Africa’s forest-dependent bats.",

"title": "A new rain frog of the genus Pristimantis (Anura, Craugastoridae) from the Cordillera del Cóndor, southeastern Ecuador",
"type": "article",
"abstract": "A new species of Pristimantis is described from the Cordillera del Cóndor, Zamora Chinchipe Province, southeastern Ecuador, based on morphological and molecular data, Pristimantis etsa sp. nov. The new species is diagnosed from its congeners by the following combination of characters: female SVL 32.5 mm and male SVL 18.3 mm, dorsolateral folds formed by rows of subconical tubercles, strongly areolate ventral skin, two distinct rows of forearm tubercles, one along the ventrolateral margin and a second along the externolateral margin of the forearm, and a prominent yellow groin blotch in the female holotype. The species belongs to the Pristimantis cryptomelas group, part of the Huicundomantis subgenus, and is closely related to P. nangaritza, P. verrucosus, and P. plateado. Currently, the species is known only from its type locality, where it inhabits low montane evergreen forests at elevations of 1,655–1,830 m. Additionally, we discuss the use of the term “ulnar tubercles” in Pristimantis, noting that it may refer to tubercles occupying different positions on the forearm.",

"title": "A seasonal bird occurrence dataset from Karataş Lake (Burdur, Turkey) with associated NDVI and climate data, 2021 to 2022",
"type": "article",
"abstract": "Wetlands provide essential ecosystem services, including carbon sequestration, water purification, flood mitigation and biodiversity support. Lake Karataş has been recognised as a Wildlife Development Area since 2006. However, it is experiencing reductions in water volume and habitat size due to insufficient rainfall, water source drying and intensive agricultural practices. This study assessed ecological changes and their effects on avian diversity using remote sensing, climate data and ornithological surveys.This dataset presents bird occurrence records from Lake Karataş (Burdur, Türkiye), derived from field surveys conducted in 2021–2022 using the point count method. The Normalised Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) was derived from Sentinel-2 imagery (2017–2024) and climate data were sourced from TerraClimate. Species richness was estimated using the Jackknife method. Lake Karataş, a shallow system converted to a reservoir in 1982, is fed by the Sarıdere. In this study, 46 bird species were recorded, including the Northern Lapwing (Vanellus vanellus, near threatened (NT)) and Common Pochard (Aythya ferina, vulnerable (VU)). Remote-sensing observations from 2017 to 2024 indicated agricultural expansion, wetland contraction and marked interannual variation in lake inundation. The summer season demonstrated the highest species richness (37 species) and abundance (3785 individuals) with an NDVI of 0.1418 and an average of 32.55°C, whereas autumn's peak NDVI (0.1482) resulted in only nine species. The findings suggest that integrating NDVI, climate metrics and bird diversity indicators is crucial for restoration planning, emphasising sustainable agriculture and water management to restore ecosystem services.",

"title": "The stoneflies (Plecoptera) of West Virginia: a new occurrence dataset",
"type": "article",
"abstract": "Stoneflies are a relatively small order of insects comprising over 4,200 extant, described species. They have long been recognised as valuable indicators of water quality, since nymphs are dependent on clean water conditions and are sensitive to the effects of sedimentation and pollution. It is also well-documented that stonefly species around the world have suffered contractions in range, leading, in some cases, to local extirpation or extinction. West Virginia is home to high stonefly species richness relative to most other USA (United States of America) states. Despite this diversity, the available literature is scattered and occurrence datasets supported by voucher specimens are non-existent. Funding from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and a consortium of northeastern USA states has provided an opportunity to document the stonefly fauna of West Virginia, especially for state and regional species of conservation interest, by gathering specimen-based occurrence data from museums, collecting new specimens statewide, and compiling trusted literature records into a single statewide dataset. Our hope is that the records presented in this data paper will further the understanding of stonefly species distribution in West Virginia and the eastern USA in general, and provide conservation agencies with usable temporal and locality data. These data will be used as the basis of an upcoming distribution atlas and annotated checklist of the stoneflies of West Virginia.Our dataset brings together over 4,500 stonefly records from all 55 counties in West Virginia. These records, spanning the previous 134 years, have been contributed by 17 institutions and personal collections. Through new collecting and the examination of museum specimens, we have been able to verify the presence of 150 species, with representatives from all nine eastern North American families. Fourteen species previously recorded from West Virginia, comprising seven Perlodidae, six Perlidae and one Chloroperlidae, have not been recovered. Most of these absences can be accounted for by changes in taxonomic nomenclature. In addition to 140 species already known from the state, we report the presence of 11 new state records, including four Perlidae, three Perlodidae, two Capniidae, one Leuctridae and one Nemouridae.",

"title": "Environmental drivers of Odonate assemblages across biogeographic provinces in the Mexican Transition Zone",
"type": "article",
"abstract": "This study shows how the different environments and biogeographical provinces in the Mexican Transition Zone influence the structure of odonate communities. Through sampling conducted in 2024 across lentic and lotic habitats in a representative area where four biogeographic provinces converge, habitats were compared by recording physicochemical water parameters and climate conditions. The results revealed that species richness did not vary significantly between habitat types (lentic vs. lotic), but showed marked differences at the biogeographical scale, with the arid and semi-arid zones being the most diverse and high elevations having the lowest species richness. Beta diversity analysis indicated higher turnover than nestedness, suggesting that each region hosts a unique fauna adapted to specific conditions. Environmental variables, such as air and water temperatures and humidity played a crucial role, differentially affecting suborders: Anisoptera showed a greater capacity for dispersal and were more affected by landscape-level, while Zygoptera exhibited higher sensitivity to local factors. We concluded that environmental heterogeneity and biogeographical factors are determinants of odonate biodiversity in the region, with Anisoptera following a classical hierarchical community assembly mechanism and Zygoptera is being influenced and limited by the filter created by environmental factors. It is imperative to implement conservation strategies that protect connectivity and integrity of waterbodies to preserve this unique biological heritage.",

"title": "Mid-Holocene Climate and Culture Change in the Atacama Desert, Northern Chile",
"type": "article",
"abstract": "AbstractTwenty archaeological campsites intercalated between more than 30 debris flows caused by heavy rainfall events between 6200 and 3100 14C yr B.P. have recently been discovered at Quebrada Puripica in the Atacama Desert of northern Chile. This record provides detailed information about extreme, short-lived climatic events during the hyperarid mid-Holocene period. For the first time, we found evidence of continuous human occupation in this area, filling the regional hiatus in the Atacama basin (“Silencio Arqueologico”) between 8000 and 4800 14C yr B.P. The transformation of Early Archaic hunters into the complex Late Archaic cultural tradition was an adaptive process. During this time, the site was a local ecological refuge with abundant resources in a generally hostile environment.",

"title": "Palaeoindian occupation of the Atacama Desert, northern Chile",
"type": "article",
"abstract": "AbstractPalaeoindian occupation of the Atacama Desert in northern Chile has been found between 12 600 and 10 200 cal. yr BP. The new site at Salar Punta Negra (24°28′S/60°53′W/2976 m) includes about 1000 classifiable, mostly unifacial artefacts and, uniquely, three different diagnostic types of early projectile points. Two of the Lateglacial/early Holocene projectile types have wide distribution and are known from different geographical areas in South America: the Palaeoindian ‘Fell’ fish‐tail point mainly from the southern cone of South America, and the triangular ‘Tuina’ points typical of the Puna of the south‐central Andes in northern Chile and northwestern Argentina. In addition, we found a third type, a stemmed point typical for the Salar Punta Negra. Filling a large geographical gap of ‘Fell’ occupation, the site at Salar Punta Negra provides evidence for generally much higher mobility and diversity of early cultures, and supports an Andean‐Pacific route for early human exploration of South America to the south through the desert at intermediate altitudes. Contemporaneous high‐amplitude climatic changes were fundamental preconditions to provide adequate environments and habitats, and to make Palaeoindian hunting‐gathering occupation possible in the Atacama Desert. "abstract": " Lacustrine sediments from the high elevation, endorheic, saline lake Negro Francisco (27°28'S/69°14'W, 4125 m) provide a detailed mid- and late-Holocene environmental history of the Southern Chilean Altiplano. Mineralogy, chemical composition and sedimentary facies analyses of the deposits confirm the regional significance of mid-Holocene aridity between 6000 and 3800 BP. Precipitation rates were signifi cantly lower than the c. 250 mm yr-1 of today. Fully arid conditions were interrupted by short-term moist spells with an average return period of about 200 years. Effective moisture increased after 3800 BP and peaked between 3000 and 2600 BP and between 2200 and 1800 BP in two phases with conditions more humid than today. Comparison with regional palaeodata suggest that these two late-Holocene humid spells were most likely related to Pacific moisture sources. Salinity levels increased again in Laguna del Negro Francisco after 1800 BP. The onset of modern climatic conditions was a stepwise, nonlinear process. However, the functioning of modern climate in this remote part of the world is not understood well enough to explain fully possible mech anisms of climatic changes in the past. ",

"title": "GIS-Based Detection of Gullies in Terrestrial LiDAR Data of the Cerro Llamoca Peatland (Peru)",
"type": "article",
"abstract": "Cushion peatlands are typical features of the high altitude Andes in South America. Due to the adaptation to difficult environmental conditions, they are very fragile ecosystems and therefore vulnerable to environmental and climate changes. Peatland erosion has severe effects on their ecological functions, such as water storage capacity. Thus, erosion monitoring is highly advisable. Erosion quantification and monitoring can be supported by high-resolution terrestrial Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR). In this study, a novel Geographic Information System (GIS)-based method for the automatic delineation and geomorphometric description of gullies in cushion peatlands is presented. The approach is a multi-step workflow based on a gully edge extraction and a sink filling algorithm applied to a conditioned digital terrain model. Our method enables the creation of GIS-ready polygons of the gullies and the derivation of geomorphometric parameters along the entire channel course. Automatically derived boundaries and gully area values correspond to a high degree (93%) with manually digitized reference polygons. The set of methods developed in this study offers a suitable tool for the monitoring and scientific analysis of fluvial morphology in cushion peatlands.",

"title": "A late Holocene record of arid events from the Cuzco region, Peru",
"type": "article",
"abstract": "AbstractThe small recently infilled lake basin of Marcacocha (13°13′S, 72°12′W, 3355 m) in the Cuzco region of Peru has a morphology and location that renders it extremely sensitive to environmental change. A record of vegetation, human impact and climatic change during the past 4200 yr has been obtained from a highly organic core taken from the centre of the basin. Sustained arid episodes that affected the Peruvian Andes may be detectable using the proxy indicator of sedge (Cyperaceae) pollen abundances. As the lake‐level was lowered during sustained drier conditions, the local catchment was colonised by Cyperaceae, whereas during lake floods, they retreated or were submerged and pollen production was correspondingly reduced. Drier episodes during prehistoric times occurred around 900 bc, 500 bc, ad 100 and ad 550, with a longer dry episode occurring from ad 900 to 1800. Evidence from the independently derived Quelccaya ice‐core record and the archaeological chronology for the Cuzco region appears to support the climatic inferences derived from the sedge data. Many of these aridity episodes appear to correspond with important cultural changes in the Cuzco region and elsewhere in the Central Andes. Copyright © 2003 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.",

"title": "Ice-cores, sediments and civilisation collapse: a cautionary tale from Lake Titicaca",
"type": "article",
"abstract": "The temptation to equate environmental change with archaeologically observed events is always with us, and matching a climatic downturn with civilisation collapse is perhaps more attractive then ever. The archaeologically observed collapse of the Tiwanaku civilisation in the twelfth century AD has been specifically related to a prolonged drought which would have affected the people’s ability to produce food. However, a careful scrutiny of the data from ice cores and lake sediments persuades the author that no such drought can be inferred: the evidence for climatic change is of quite a different scale and order to the archaeological changes and cannot be used as an explanation of social events.",

"title": "The history of South American tropical precipitation for the past 25,000 years",
"type": "article",
"abstract": "Long sediment cores recovered from the deep portions of Lake Titicaca are used to reconstruct the precipitation history of tropical South America for the past 25,000 years. Lake Titicaca was a deep, fresh, and continuously overflowing lake during the last glacial stage, from before 25,000 to 15,000 calibrated years before the present (cal yr B.P.), signifying that during the last glacial maximum (LGM), the Altiplano of Bolivia and Peru and much of the Amazon basin were wetter than today. The LGM in this part of the Andes is dated at 21,000 cal yr B.P., approximately coincident with the global LGM. Maximum aridity and lowest lake level occurred in the early and middle Holocene (8000 to 5500 cal yr B.P.) during a time of low summer insolation. Today, rising levels of Lake Titicaca and wet conditions in Amazonia are correlated with anomalously cold sea-surface temperatures in the northern equatorial Atlantic. Likewise, during the deglacial and Holocene periods, there were several millennial-scale wet phases on the Altiplano and in Amazonia that coincided with anomalously cold periods in the equatorial and high-latitude North Atlantic, such as the Younger Dryas.",

Within the constraints of the heat and water budget, model calculations are used to estimate the precipitation rate that would allow hydrologic equilibrium. On this basis it is suggested that rainfall on the Altiplano during the episodes of enlarged lakes was, respectively, some 300 and 200 mm annum−1 larger than at present, representing increases of about 75 and 50%, respectively. Field evidence suggests that the episodes of enlarged lakes on the Altiplano may have preceded or coincided with periods of maximum glaciation in the neigh-boring Andes. In this region with high elevation of the ice equilibrium line, increased precipitation is particularly conducive to glaciation.",

"title": "Radiocarbon Reservoir Effect and the Timing of the Late-Glacial/Early Holocene Humid Phase in the Atacama Desert (Northern Chile)",
"type": "article",
"abstract": "We revise substantially the regional chronology of lake-level fluctuations from the late-glacial/early Holocene humid phase along a high altitude transect (3500 to 4500 m) between 18°S and 28°S in the Southwestern Altiplano of Northern Chile. Radiocarbon dates and210Pb profiles for limnic and terrestrial materials allow us to estimate and justify reservoir correction values for conventional14C dates. Our chronology suggests that the latest Pleistocene/early Holocene humid phase started between 13,000 and 12,00014C yr B.P., and that maximum lake levels were reached between 10,800 and 920014C yr B.P. This is significantly younger than what has been established so far for the Titicaca–Uyuni Basin in Bolivia. The paleolakes disappeared sometime between 8400 and 800014C yr B.P. Our revised chronology agrees with the regional history of human occupation, and is broadly synchronous with vegetation changes in subtropical continental South America, and with the onset of wetland expansion in the northern hemisphere tropics.",

"title": "Lake-Level Chronology on the Southern Bolivian Altiplano (18°–23°S) During Late-Glacial Time and the Early Holocene",
"type": "article",
"abstract": "AbstractStratigraphic analyses of outcrops, shorelines, and diatoms from the southern Bolivian Altiplano (Uyuni-Coipasa basin) reveal two major lacustrine phases during the late-glacial period and the early Holocene, based on a chronology established by radiocarbon and U/Th control. A comparison of14C and230Th/234U ages shows that during times of high lake level, radiocarbon ages are valid. However, during low-water periods,14C ages must be corrected for a reservoir effect. The lacustrine Tauca phase started a little before 16,00014C yr B.P., and the lake level reached its maximum between 13,000 and 12,00014C yr B.P. A dry event (Ticaña) occurred after ca. 12,000 and before 950014C yr B.P. A moderate lacustrine oscillation (Coipasa event) occurred between ca. 9500 and 850014C yr B.P., using a reservoir-corrected conventional14C chronology. Comparisons between the lake-level chronology in the Uyuni-Coipasa basin and data from other southern tropical areas of South America suggest that the lacustrine evolution may reflect large-scale climatic changes.",
